In a bewildering move, Sony officially shut down Bluepoint Games. This studio famously created the 2020 Demon’s Souls remake.

Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier broke this shocking news today. He confirmed the tragic studio closure on BlueSky. Schreier reported that PlayStation decided to close the acclaimed developer.

A Heartbreaking Loss for PlayStation Fans

This heartbreaking decision affects 70 talented employees. Sony originally purchased the company back in 2021. Prior to that, Bluepoint enjoyed a lengthy relationship with PlayStation.

They successfully developed Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. Furthermore, they crafted the stunning Shadow of the Colossus remake.

Sony recently released a statement confirming the closure. The beloved studio will officially lock its doors next month.

The Push for Live-Service Games

Fans hailed the 2021 acquisition as a brilliant move. Bluepoint built a massive reputation as a reliable support studio. For example, they actively worked on God of War: Ragnarök. They also mastered the art of resurrecting older classic games.

However, leadership apparently tasked them with a live-service spin-off. This God of War multiplayer project contradicted their core strengths. Sony eventually canceled that controversial project entirely.

Consequently, this cancellation left Bluepoint without a clear creative direction. Schreier noted that the studio spent the last year pitching. They desperately tried to determine their next big project.

Confusing Timing and Unanswered Questions

The timing of this closure feels incredibly weird. Sony Santa Monica just announced a brand-new remake project. They plan to remake the original God of War trilogy.

Bluepoint would have handled this specific project perfectly. Instead, Sony will develop the game using other internal teams.

We still do not know Sony’s exact reasoning. Presumably, the decision comes down purely to financial motives. Bluepoint likely fell victim to Sony’s heavy live-service push.

Many gamers now question Sony’s long-term business strategy. Fans worry deeply about the future of classic PlayStation remakes.
